Young's High Bridge, Railway bridge in Anderson County, United States
Young's High Bridge is a steel cantilever railroad structure that spans across the Kentucky River between Anderson County and Woodford County, rising 283 feet above the water below. The bridge extends roughly half a mile in total length using an engineering design that projects outward from the supporting towers.
Built in 1889 by the Union Bridge Company and Detroit Bridge and Iron Works, the bridge originally served the Louisville Southern Railroad with trains running across its span. When the last freight train crossed in 1985, its primary function as an active railroad link ended.
The name reflects its railroad heritage, and the structure still carries the mark of late 19th-century industrial ambition visible in every beam and joint. Visitors can sense how this bridge once played a vital role in connecting communities through rail transport.
The bridge is primarily accessible today through bungee jumping activities managed by Vertigo Bungee, which operates from the structure for those seeking an adrenaline experience. Weather conditions affect jump availability, so planning ahead and checking current conditions before your visit is important.
The Bluegrass Railroad Museum operates excursion train rides just next to the bridge, allowing visitors to approach and experience the eastern end of the structure from a different vantage point. These heritage train journeys add a nostalgic dimension to exploring the bridge.
