Old United States Courthouse and Post Office, courthouse in Frankfort, Kentucky, United States
The Old United States Courthouse and Post Office is a large stone building in Frankfort, Kentucky, constructed between 1883 and 1887. It combines Second Empire and Renaissance Revival architecture, featuring a steep slate roof, tall windows, and decorative stonework.
The building began construction in 1883 because Frankfort was growing rapidly after the Civil War and needed new federal facilities. It served as a post office and courthouse for nearly 80 years before the post office relocated in 1965.
The building's name reflects its dual purpose as both courthouse and postal facility in one structure. Its grand exterior with ornamental details still conveys a sense of importance and authority to those who pass by.
The building is now part of Kentucky State University's campus and located downtown in Frankfort, making it easily accessible to visit. The massive stone walls and slate roof are clearly visible from the street, and access should be possible during university business hours.
After the post office moved out in 1965, the building became the Paul Sawyier Library before Kentucky State University took it over in 2009, showing its long second life as an educational facility. This transformation preserves the site's history while serving new purposes.
