Kentucky State Capitol, Capitol building in Frankfort, United States.
Kentucky State Capitol is a government building in Beaux-Arts style located in Frankfort, the state capital, with ionic columns and a dome-topped facade. Inside, high ceilings, marble staircases, and wall paintings decorate main rooms such as legislative chambers and corridors.
Frank Mills Andrews designed the building, which opened in 1910 to replace the previous seat of the legislature that had been destroyed by fire. Its completion marked the move of state government to its current downtown Frankfort location.
Inside, painted scenes depict moments from state history and appear along corridors and main halls that visitors walk through during tours. Statues honor local figures who played roles in government, and the interior spaces host formal ceremonies where officials gather.
Guided walks through main areas take place on weekdays between 9 AM and 4 PM, with Saturday access available from April onward between 10 AM and 2 PM. Visitors should expect entry checks and plan for comfortable footwear to move through multiple floors.
The rotunda beneath the main dome rises to the top floor and has openings above that let natural light filter down through the space. Visitors standing below can look up into the high vault and see details of the interior finish.
