Holy Cross Church and School Complex-Latonia, historic church in Kentucky, United States
Holy Cross Church and School Complex comprises a church and attached educational buildings constructed between 1906 and 1941 on Church Street in Covington. The campus is divided by the street, with the church and rectory on one side and the school and convent structures on the other.
The parish was approved in 1889 when residents requested their own church rather than traveling to a distant parish. An initial building was completed in 1891, but by the early 1900s growth required a larger structure, which was finished in 1908 and still stands today.
The church served as a gathering place for the German Catholic community who needed their own parish closer to home. Today visitors can observe how the complex grew organically, with new buildings added as the congregation expanded and its needs changed.
The complex is easily reached from Church Street and sits in a residential area with nearby street parking available. The buildings are visible from the street, and visitors can observe the architecture from outside or inquire about visiting during services and community events.
A fire in the attic in 1990 caused significant damage, yet the building was repaired and reopened by July of that year, demonstrating the community's commitment to preserving their landmark. This resilience reflects the deep importance the complex holds for local families.
