World Peace Bell, Ceremonial bell in Newport, United States
The World Peace Bell is a large bronze bell located in Newport, Kentucky, measuring 12 feet (3.6 meters) in diameter and height and weighing 66,000 pounds (30,000 kilograms). Cast from 80 percent copper and 20 percent tin, it rings daily at noon with its sound carrying across a wide area.
The bell was cast in France in 1998 and created to mark the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It was first rung on January 1, 2000, marking the start of a new millennium.
The bell displays inscriptions about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and features engravings showing key moments from the last thousand years. These symbols speak to visitors about peace and human dignity in a way that goes beyond words.
The bell is located at York Street in Newport and is open to visitors without charge. Plan to visit around noon when the bell rings, as this is when you will hear its sound and experience the full effect of the monument.
The bell features an uncommon bent steel yoke design that shifts the rotation point to its center of gravity. This special construction creates a particular swinging motion that sets it apart from other large bells.
