Newport Aquarium, Public aquarium at Newport on the Levee, Kentucky, US
Newport Aquarium is a public aquarium in Newport, Kentucky, right on the Ohio riverfront, featuring more than ten thousand animals from hundreds of species. The facility divides into galleries with tropical reefs, freshwater tanks, a touch pool for rays, and a tunnel section where you walk beneath swimming sharks.
The facility opened in the late nineties as part of a revitalization project for the Newport riverfront. Later expansions added specialized tanks for penguins, alligators, and interactive areas.
Its name comes from the city of Newport on the Ohio River, and the building sits right on the waterfront with views of Cincinnati. Feedings and keeper talks happen several times a day, so visitors can learn more about life underwater.
The facility sits about a ten-minute walk from downtown Cincinnati and is easily reached by bridge or ferry. Visitors should plan at least two to three hours for a full tour of all areas.
A rope bridge stretches over an open shark tank, so you stand directly above the swimming animals with the water visible below. This installation was the first of its kind on the North American continent and remains especially popular with children.
