Cincinnati Street Gas Lamps
Cincinnati Street Gas Lamps, Historic gas lamp district in Cincinnati, United States.
Cincinnati Street Gas Lamps is a collection of working gas lights spread across many neighborhoods throughout the city. They stand at regular intervals along streets, each one featuring a metal base and glass globe designed to hold a lit gas flame.
Installation of these gas lights began in 1837 under the Cincinnati Gas Light and Coke Company. The network grew rapidly during the 19th century, showing how quickly this technology spread across the city.
These gas lamps dot the streets of many neighborhoods and remind people of the era when gas powered city lighting at night. You see them scattered throughout the area, showing how residents once lit their streets and public spaces.
These lamps are found throughout the city and are easy to spot as you walk through different neighborhoods. They light up at night and offer a sense of how street lighting worked long ago, which is especially interesting to see in the evening.
Many of these lamps date back to the 1800s, with some originating in 1843, making them among the oldest still-working gas lights anywhere. The city maintains one of the largest operating gas light networks in America, with each lamp regularly serviced and kept in working order.
