Cincinnati–Newport Bridge, Cantilever bridge between Newport and Cincinnati, US
The Cincinnati-Newport Bridge is a cantilever structure spanning the Ohio River between Newport, Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio. It was built to carry railroad traffic and later served vehicles until its conversion to pedestrian use.
Built between 1886 and 1890, it became the first permanent rail crossing over the Ohio River in the region. Years later it adapted to automobile traffic before being closed to vehicles in the early 2000s.
The bridge demonstrates how rail connections shaped the growth of both cities and facilitated commerce across the river. It stands as a reminder of the era when railroads were central to regional economic life.
The best time to cross is during daylight when good light reveals the steel structure and river views clearly. The walkway is easy to access and you can view the architecture from different angles along the route.
After being converted to pedestrian use, the entire structure was painted a striking purple color that makes it highly visible. This unexpected hue transforms what was once a purely industrial structure into something visually memorable.
