Murillo Flats, Neoclassical apartment building in downtown Des Moines, United States
Murillo Flats is a three-story brick building with classical columns and balanced proportions in downtown Des Moines. It contains seven residential units distributed across the floors, reflecting neoclassical design principles of the early 1900s.
The building was constructed in 1903 as a residential complex reflecting downtown housing development. In 2008, the entire structure was moved 705 tons in a major preservation effort to save it from demolition.
The building shows how wealthier residents in the early 1900s began living in apartments rather than separate houses in the city. The layout of the units reflects ideas about private comfort and urban living that shaped downtown neighborhoods.
The building is located in an active downtown area with good walkability and nearby shops and services. Since it remains residential, visitors can best appreciate the historic exterior and architectural details from the street.
In 2008, the entire building was moved as one intact structure, a rare feat showing how much the city valued its preservation. Two sisters, Florence and Helen Wyse, managed it as a residence for seven decades, giving the place a sense of continuity few buildings experience.
