Colonial Lake, body of water
Colonial Lake is a small man-made reservoir in Lawrence Township, Mercer County, New Jersey, covering about 25 acres of land. The park features a jogging path around the water, three tennis courts, pickleball courts, and playground equipment for families.
The lake was created in 1924 when builders constructed a dam across Shabakunk Creek to provide a recreational space for the area. This project led to the development of the Colonial Lakelands neighborhood and reflects local efforts to create community outdoor spaces.
The lake takes its name from the colonial heritage of the surrounding area. Residents and visitors use the park and water as a gathering space for daily outdoor activities and seasonal recreation.
The park is easy to find, located directly across Business Route 1 near the Lawrence Shopping Center. Fishing is best in spring when the lake is stocked, and the jogging path and recreational facilities are accessible year-round for visitors.
The lake is fed by Shabakunk Creek, and the continuous flow of water keeps it fresh and in good condition. This natural water movement is a reason the lake has remained a reliable recreation spot for more than a century.
