New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Site
New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Site, Revolutionary War military site in New Windsor, New York, United States.
New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Site is a 167-acre property featuring reconstructed log huts and military buildings from the Revolutionary War era. The grounds sit along Route 300 and include a visitor center with exhibits explaining the camp's role during that period.
The site served as the winter camp for roughly 7,000 Continental Army soldiers under General George Washington from 1782 to 1783. It was the final encampment of the army during the Revolutionary War before troops were disbanded.
The Temple served as a gathering place where Washington addressed officers during the Newburgh Conspiracy crisis. This space shows how important such meeting points were for communication between leadership and troops.
The site is open April through October with military demonstrations and blacksmithing presentations Wednesday through Sunday. It helps to allow time for exploring the grounds since the property is large and contains multiple buildings to visit.
The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor on the grounds marks where Washington first presented the Badge of Military Merit. This made the location the birthplace of one of the nation's most important military honors.
