Browns Pond, body of water
Browns Pond is a small reservoir in Orange County, New York, covering roughly 78 hectares with a distinctive hook-shaped outline. It sits in the Town of New Windsor near Newburgh and is accessible by Mount Airy Road that curves around its perimeter.
The reservoir developed as a water source for Newburgh and has served the city for many years. Since 2014, when contamination was discovered in the primary water supply, it has become a crucial backup source for the city's drinking water system.
The site has no recreational or swimming facilities and is reserved primarily for water management purposes. Visitors can explore the surrounding natural landscape with its meadows and wetlands from Mount Airy Road that circles the area.
The area features natural wetlands and meadows that function as filters, helping rainwater stay clean as it flows into the reservoir. Protection of this land was achieved through conservation efforts that secured nearly 33 hectares near the reservoir to prevent future development.
