Highlandtown, Historic residential neighborhood in Baltimore, United States.

Highlandtown is a residential neighborhood in Baltimore that extends from Haven Street to Linwood Avenue and is defined by brick row houses. Eastern Avenue serves as the main commercial street, lined with local shops and restaurants that form the economic heart of the area.

The neighborhood was originally called Snake Hill, established in 1866 outside Baltimore's city limits, and was initially settled by German American families. It became part of Baltimore in 1919 following incorporation into the city.

Highlandtown is home to people from Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Italy, Ireland, Greece, Ukraine, and increasingly from Latin America, who share their customs and traditions through daily life. These varied communities have shaped the neighborhood over generations and left their marks in shops, restaurants, and local events.

The area is easy to explore on foot, with Eastern Avenue being the best place to walk and shop. The streets are accessible, and many shops and restaurants line the main thoroughfares.

Eight parallel streets in eastern Highlandtown follow an unusual pattern, arranged alphabetically from B to H and revealing a systematic planning approach from earlier times. This ordered arrangement (Baylis, Conkling, Dean, Eaton, Fagley, Grundy, and Haven) stands out from the more random street names found elsewhere in Baltimore.
