Orpheus with the Awkward Foot, Bronze statue at Fort McHenry, United States
Orpheus with the Awkward Foot is a bronze sculpture standing on a marble base near the entrance of Fort McHenry National Monument. The artwork features a large figure playing a lyre with detailed relief work decorating its pedestal.
The sculpture was commissioned in 1914 to mark the hundredth anniversary of The Star-Spangled Banner, which was written during the Battle of Baltimore. The work was completed and dedicated in 1922.
The sculpture brings together Greek mythology and American history by showing Orpheus alongside medallions that honor Francis Scott Key.
The artwork is on view throughout the year during Fort McHenry's regular hours. Visitors should allow time to observe the bronze details and carved elements of the marble pedestal up close.
The 1922 dedication ceremony was the first time a US president's voice was broadcast over radio to millions of people nationwide. This pioneering moment turned the monument's unveiling into a historic event in the story of mass communication.
