Jefferson Standard Building
Jefferson Standard Building, Art Deco skyscraper in downtown Greensboro, United States
The Jefferson Standard Building is an Art Deco skyscraper that rises 18 floors with a facade of terra cotta and granite. Its distinctive U-shaped design allows natural light and air to reach the commercial spaces that open onto interior hallways.
The building was completed in 1923 and was initially the tallest structure between Washington and Atlanta. This distinction lasted until 1927, when another building surpassed it in height.
A prominent bust of Thomas Jefferson marks the entrance, and decorative elements throughout the ground floor represent themes of commerce and prosperity. These details reflect the building's role as a center of business activity and economic importance to the city.
The building is easy to locate in downtown and stands out clearly from street level due to its distinctive shape and height. Its well-preserved terra cotta and granite exterior makes it a good destination for anyone interested in architecture.
The structure required 23 carloads of marble during its construction, reflecting the enormous resources invested in building it. Today it houses the headquarters for the life insurance operations of Lincoln Financial Group.
