Weatherspoon Art Museum, Modern art museum at University of North Carolina, Greensboro, United States
Weatherspoon Art Museum is an art museum at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro housed across six galleries with around 6,000 works. The focus is on American art from the 20th century to the present day.
The museum started in 1941 when Gregory Ivy opened it inside a former physics laboratory. It was named after Elizabeth McIver Weatherspoon, an art educator who worked at Woman's College.
The collection includes works by Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, and Henri Matisse that visitors can experience directly on the galleries. These pieces reflect how American art developed over time and invite people to discover different artistic approaches.
The museum sits on Spring Garden Street and offers free entry Tuesday through Saturday. On Thursday evenings it stays open until 8 PM, giving you extra time to explore the galleries.
The Art on Paper exhibition has been showing works by regional, national, and international artists every two years since 1965. Support from Dillard Paper Company has kept this event going and makes it a special showcase in the region's art calendar.
