Newport News Park

Newport News Park is a large natural preserve in Virginia featuring woodlands, wetland areas, and two reservoirs distributed throughout its terrain. The property offers hiking trails, cycling paths, fishing areas, and a Discovery Center that provide access to outdoor activities across the grounds.

The site preserves earthwork fortifications from 1862 that were built during the American Civil War campaign at Yorktown. These military structures reflect the strategic importance of the region during that conflict.

The park serves as a gathering place for the Hampton Road Bird Club, where enthusiasts conduct regular guided walks to observe numerous bird species in their natural habitat. Visitors often encounter local groups actively engaged in exploring and sharing knowledge about the native wildlife throughout the grounds.

The main entrance on Jefferson Avenue provides straightforward access to the park's key areas and facilities. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and bring plenty of water, especially when planning longer hikes through the wooded and wetland sections.

The grounds feature a dedicated aeromodel airfield with a 400-foot (120 m) runway built specifically for remote-control aircraft operations. This facility regularly attracts enthusiast pilots who operate their aircraft in this designated space.
