George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge, Double swing span steel bridge in Yorktown, Virginia, US

The George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge is a steel structure with two swing spans that crosses the York River to link Yorktown and Gloucester Point in Virginia. The crossing spans roughly 1,140 meters and accommodates four lanes of traffic moving in both directions.

The structure opened in 1952 to improve road connections across the York River. A major overhaul between 1994 and 1996 renewed the bridge with minimal disruption, requiring just nine days of complete closure.

The bridge structure incorporates dedicated nesting locations for peregrine falcons, contributing to Virginia's wildlife conservation programs.

The bridge operates as a toll facility where traffic heading north makes payment. Plan for a few extra minutes at the toll collection point, particularly during peak hours in early morning and late afternoon.

The two swing spans rank among the largest of their kind globally and allow ships to pass by rotating sideways. Today these mechanisms rarely activate since vessel traffic on the York River has significantly decreased.
