Yorktown Battlefield

Yorktown Battlefield is a historic site in Virginia where the American Revolution's main conflict ended in 1781. The grounds feature open fields, patches of woodland, and earthen fortifications that visitors can explore on foot or by car along marked driving routes.

In 1781, British forces led by Lord Cornwallis surrendered to General George Washington and French allies, marking the end of the American Revolution. This surrender concluded a years-long conflict that secured independence for the thirteen colonies.

The battlefield honors the memory of American and French soldiers whose stories remain woven into this place today. Visitors feel a connection to these people as they walk the same fields and stand where leaders made decisions that changed the course of history.

The best way to explore the grounds is by car, as public transit does not serve this location. Parking at the visitor center is free, and you can follow marked driving routes with several stops to get out and walk around.

The Moore House was where officers from both sides met to discuss and sign the terms of surrender. This meeting was a pivotal moment that shaped the future of the newly independent nation.
