Henry Ford Square House, Historic residence in Garden City, Michigan, United States.
The Henry Ford Square House is a historic residence with a square footprint and mansard roof located in Garden City, Michigan. The structure features wood siding, a centered front entrance, and decorative caps over the windows.
The house was built in 1888 and served as the first residence of Henry and Clara Ford until 1891. They moved to Detroit when Henry took a position at the Edison Illuminating Company.
Clara Ford designed the house layout according to her own vision. The home reflected practical living arrangements typical for young families in the area during that era.
The building was relocated to its current location on Beechwood Avenue in 1952 to make room for the construction of the Southfield Freeway. Visitors should note that the house's present position is the result of this intentional relocation.
Henry Ford used timber from his own property and processed it in his personal sawmill before building the house with a carpenter's assistance. This hands-on approach to self-sufficiency was typical of his work methods and relationship with production.
