Canton Township MPS

Canton Township MPS is a collection of eleven historic houses in Michigan built between 1825 and 1904 that showcase early settlement architecture. These buildings represent different building styles and document the architectural development of the region across several decades.

Settlement of Canton Township began in 1825 when Philander and Samuel Burd filed their initial land claims and established the foundations of the community. The houses in this collection were built over the following decades and reflect the growth of the settlement.

The Planning Commission reviews development proposals, makes recommendations to the Township Board, and maintains records following Michigan Open Meetings Act regulations.

To visit these houses, plan to walk around different locations throughout the township. It helps to gather information about specific addresses beforehand to locate each site easily.

The Thomas and Maria Blackman Bartlett House shows how architecture changed over time, starting with Greek Revival style elements and later modified with Victorian additions. This single house documents two different building periods in its design.
