The Commandant's Quarters is a two-story red-brick building with a low-pitched hipped roof and covered verandas, located on Michigan Avenue in Dearborn, Michigan. It is now part of the Dearborn Historical Museum and holds exhibits that trace the development of the surrounding region.
The building was constructed in 1834 as part of the Detroit Arsenal, serving as the home for the officers who oversaw the region's military supplies. Over time, all other structures in the complex were demolished, leaving this one as the only survivor.
The building shows Federal-style design on the outside, with Greek Revival details visible inside the furnished rooms. Walking through them gives a clear sense of how an officer's household was arranged and used in everyday life during that period.
The building sits on a main road in Dearborn and is easy to reach by car, with parking nearby. Allow enough time to walk through the rooms at a comfortable pace, as some spaces inside are small.
The original arsenal complex had eleven buildings, but this is the only one that was never torn down. It now stands in a setting that offers almost no visual clue of the military site that once surrounded it.
