Main Street Bridge
Main Street Bridge, National Register bridge in downtown Stamford, United States.
The Main Street Bridge spans the Rippowam River and features a wrought-iron truss design built to carry traffic across downtown. The structure supports both vehicles and pedestrians moving between residential and commercial zones.
The Berlin Iron Bridge Company built this structure in the late 1800s as Connecticut expanded its infrastructure. It remains the only wrought-iron lenticular truss bridge of its kind on a major urban route in the state.
The bridge represents Stamford's industrial growth period and shows how 19th century engineers and builders approached their work. It continues to shape the city's character by linking different parts of town together.
The bridge sits in downtown Stamford and handles regular traffic from vehicles and people on foot. You can walk across it easily or view it from street level to appreciate the structural details.
This bridge is part of a rare group of lenticular truss designs still standing in Connecticut. The wrought-iron design cleverly supports heavy traffic using less material than other bridges of that era.
