Basilica of Saint John the Evangelist, Catholic basilica in downtown Stamford, United States
The church structure spans 100 by 180 feet with a Gothic design featuring white Carrera marble and Mexican onyx in the main altar area.
The original wooden church was built in 1851, while the current stone building was constructed in 1868 by architect James Murphy from Providence.
The basilica provides religious services in multiple languages, serving Irish, Italian, Polish, Slovak, Hispanic, and Haitian communities throughout its history.
The basilica maintains a seating capacity of 1,600 people and offers daily masses with confessions available in Italian, Spanish, French, Creole, Portuguese, and English.
The rectory buildings functioned as a stop on the Underground Railroad before the Civil War, helping African American slaves reach freedom.
