Moon Island, Training facility island in Quincy Bay, Massachusetts.
Moon Island is a 22-hectare island in Quincy Bay near Boston, now primarily used by the fire and police departments for training purposes. The island features a distinctive raised terrain that supports its current operational facilities.
Boston acquired the island in 1878 and constructed a major sewerage system that shaped the landscape until the 1970s. After this system was decommissioned, the island transitioned to its current use.
Indigenous communities accessed the island seasonally before European settlement, using it for gathering resources and fishing in the surrounding waters.
The island houses a fire department training academy and a police shooting range, both located on the grounds. Access is limited since it remains an active training facility.
The island still has four large storage tanks from its sewage treatment era that stand as reminders of its industrial past. These structures have remained unusually intact and create an interesting contrast with the modern training facilities.
