Riverton Historic District

Riverton Historic District is an area with 66 historic buildings located where the North and South Forks of the Shenandoah River meet. The structures span across several streets and show how the neighborhood developed over time into an established part of town.

The area was founded in 1849 and grew quickly after the Manassas Gap Railroad arrived in 1854. This railroad connected river shipping with rail transport, turning the location into a major crossroads for trade.

The buildings show a mix of architectural styles from the 1800s, ranging from simple revival designs to ornate Victorian details. Walking through the district, you can see how the structures reflect the area's past as a bustling commercial hub.

The district spreads across several streets like Crisman Drive, Riverside Drive, and Strasburg Road that are easy to explore on foot. Plan time to examine individual buildings closely and notice the variety of architectural styles across the area.

The Carson Lime Company, founded in 1868 by Irish immigrant Samuel Carson, built worker housing and an elegant Queen Anne-style mansion within the district. This enterprise shows how industry and residential development grew together in the area.
