The Alma Downtown Historic District stretches along Superior Street between Pine River and Prospect Avenue, containing 72 commercial buildings erected between 1874 and 1960. Most structures feature ground-floor storefronts directly accessible from the sidewalk, with buildings ranging from one to three stories in height.
Development of the district began in the 1850s when General Ralph Ely purchased land and constructed a mill, establishing a settlement initially called Elyton. This early focus on industry and commerce sparked the construction of most buildings that define the area today.
The buildings showcase various architectural styles from different periods, including Brick Commercial, Italianate, Queen Anne, and Art Moderne designs that reflect local building preferences over time.
