George Newton House, historic house in Cass County, Michigan, USA

The George Newton House is a two-story residential building in Italianate style located in Cass County, Michigan, completed in 1865. The structure features clapboard siding, a hip roof topped with a small belvedere, a wide front porch, and decorative brackets under the eaves characteristic of the period.

The Newton family arrived in the region in the early 1800s, with Colonel James Newton building an initial house around 1844. His son George commissioned architect Christian G. Haefner to design a larger Italianate residence in 1865, which reflected the family's growing prominence.

The house reflects how the Newton family expressed their social standing through an elaborate residential design. The building's size and style signaled their importance as local leaders to visitors and neighbors.

The house sits on a quiet property with mature trees and is accessible by a nearby road. Visitors should check opening times beforehand since it operates seasonally and wear comfortable shoes for exploring the multiple levels and surrounding grounds.

The original property encompassed hundreds of acres of old-growth forest and farmland that were later sold or repurposed, yet the house itself remained exceptionally preserved. Walking up to the structure through the mature trees still evokes the feeling of stepping into another era.
