Built in 1882 for $24,000, the structure combined a sheriff's residence with jail facilities, operating as a detention center until 1974.
The Second Empire architectural design reflects the government buildings standards of the 1880s in the American Midwest.
The Old Sheriff's House Foundation maintains the property and permits visitors to explore the former cells and living quarters throughout the year.
Bank robber John Dillinger escaped from this facility in 1934, using Sheriff Lillian Holley's personal vehicle for his getaway.
