Meyer's Castle

Meyer's Castle is a Tudor Revival residence in Dyer, Indiana, featuring 43 rooms and 215 windows spread across 16 acres of land with terraced gardens and native plantings. The property includes a grand entrance hall with multiple dining areas and an elevator that connects three floors.

The estate was built between 1929 and 1931 by architect Cosbey Bernard Sr and served as the private residence of botanist Joseph Meyer until 1950. Construction took place during the Great Depression, a period when such large projects were uncommon.

European craftsmen spent two years creating intricate wood carvings throughout the interior, with detailed oak work visible in the foyer and living areas. The artistry reflects traditional European building craftsmanship brought to this American estate.

Access to the property works best through the north or south entrance hall depending on which part of the estate you want to visit. The elevator system allows visitors to move between the three floors without using stairs.

The estate sits at the highest point of Lake County, where artifacts from Sauk and Potawatomi tribes were discovered near the building site. These findings show the land held significance for Native peoples long before its modern development.
