Lake County Tuberculosis Sanatorium, Nurses Home and Superintendent's House
Lake County Tuberculosis Sanatorium, Nurses Home and Superintendent's House, Medical heritage building in Crown Point, Indiana, United States.
Lake County Tuberculosis Sanatorium is a three-story brick building with a hipped roof and Georgian-style columns at the entrance. The complex includes separate structures for nursing staff and a superintendent's residence.
The sanatorium was built in 1925 and expanded in 1930 to treat tuberculosis patients. It played an important role in American public health and remained in operation until it closed in 1971.
The building reflects early twentieth-century hospital design, with Georgian elements and spaces built specifically for patients and staff. This mix of stylish architecture and practical facilities shows how medical institutions of that era aimed to be both functional and respectful.
The property is located on North Main Street and spreads across multiple acres with separate buildings that are easy to identify. Visitors should allow time to explore the entire complex, as the different structures are spread out.
The nursing staff building is one of only two surviving tuberculosis staff residences in Indiana and retains its original architecture. This rarity makes the site an important record of the special living arrangements designed for medical workers of that era.
