Winter Inn, Hotel in den Vereinigten Staaten
The Winter Inn is a three-story hotel in Greenville built in 1902 in Late Victorian style. The red brick building features an L-shaped design with asymmetrically arranged windows and leaded-glass arched windows on the ground floor, complemented by brownstone belt courses and a metal cornice along its edge.
The site hosted several hotels since the 1850s until fire destroyed the last one in 1900. Thomas B. Winter then built the current structure in 1902 with a dance hall added around 1902-03, and after fire damage in 1978, the hotel was carefully restored and reopened in 1980.
The Winter Inn reflects the life of small American towns in the early 1900s. Its corner entrance and asymmetrical windows tell of a time when such hotels served as gathering places for both travelers and locals.
The hotel sits at the corner of North Lafayette downtown, easy to reach on foot. The interior spaces with asymmetrical entrances and different levels require brief orientation, but the friendly staff readily helps visitors navigate.
The building was added to the Michigan State Historic Sites list in 1979 and to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. This recognition honors its value as a testament to modest, locally owned hotels that once formed the backbone of small American communities.
