Canal Shores Golf Course, Non-profit golf course in Evanston, Illinois, US
Canal Shores is an 18-hole golf course spread across 82 acres, featuring narrow fairways and tree-lined paths along the North Shore Channel of the Chicago River. The layout measures 3,600 yards with a par-60 design that accommodates players of different abilities.
The course was founded in 1919 and designed by architect Tom Bendelow, a pioneer in golf course design. More than a century later, it underwent major renovations in 2022 under the direction of Todd Quitno.
The place is named after legendary golfer Chick Evans, who devoted his life to golf education and supporting young players through scholarships. This heritage shapes how the course operates and what it represents to the local community today.
The course operates year-round at 1030 Central Street in Evanston, located directly along a major waterway in the Chicago area. Players should come prepared for varying weather conditions and expect a shorter, more compact layout than a standard course.
Players navigate through a century-old oak forest while trains from Chicago's L and Metra systems pass nearby, blending natural woodland with urban infrastructure in an unexpected way. This unusual setting makes the experience quite different from typical golf courses.
