Upper Main Street Historic District

The Upper Main Street Historic District is a historic area in Lafayette, Indiana, featuring rows of buildings from different periods and architectural styles. The structures show Classical Revival, Italianate, and Romanesque designs that form the character of this former shopping district.

The district grew into the city's main commercial center after 1840 when the railroad arrived and the city boundaries shifted. This rail connection brought merchants and activity that made the area the heart of Lafayette's shopping and business life.

The Mars Theater from 1921 and Lafayette Theater from 1938 were gathering places for entertainment that shaped how people spent their leisure time. These two buildings show what mattered to the community in the early 20th century.
