Box Butte Reservoir State Recreation Area, Recreation area in Dawes County, United States
Box Butte Reservoir State Recreation Area is a recreation area centered on a 1,600-acre reservoir on the Niobrara River in northwestern Nebraska. The entire site covers about 2,200 acres and provides access to water and open spaces for outdoor activities.
This area was created in the 1950s as part of the Mirage Flats Project to manage water resources in the dry region. The dam provided both water management benefits and opened the land for recreation.
More than 200 bird species have been recorded here since the 1970s, making this a key destination for birders in the Nebraska Panhandle. The diversity of waterfowl and upland birds attracts observers year-round.
The area has multiple boat ramps and launching points, with camping spots and picnic areas scattered around the shoreline. A permit is required to enter, and spring and fall offer the most comfortable visiting conditions.
The shoreline is lined with dense groves of cottonwood and willow trees that create habitat for northern pike, walleye, and largemouth bass. These natural features also provide shelter for birds and other wildlife.
