The Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center occupies a former Carnegie-style library building on the Chadron State College campus, featuring exhibits about regional history.
The building, constructed in 1929, served as the college library until 1967 and received National Register of Historic Places designation for its Neoclassical architecture.
The center preserves manuscripts, recordings, and artifacts that document the experiences of Native Americans and settlers in the High Plains region.
Visitors can access the heritage center Monday through Thursday from 10:00 AM to noon and 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, with free admission to all exhibitions.
The surrounding heritage gardens contain fruit trees from the original Sandoz family homestead and plant species introduced by early Plains inhabitants.
