York's Wild Kingdom, Zoo and travelling carnival in York County, Maine, US
York's Wild Kingdom is a zoo and travelling carnival in York Beach, York County, Maine. The park combines animal exhibits with rides, mini-golf, and a petting zoo, all arranged along shaded walking paths that visitors can cover in a few hours.
The park opened in 1980 in York Beach and has been privately run ever since. It receives no government funding, so ticket sales cover all costs including animal care and new exhibits.
The park is open from late May through late September, and early morning visits on weekdays tend to be less crowded with animals more active. Comfortable shoes and sun protection are recommended, and bringing small change is handy for the animal feed machines.
The park has a walk-through area called the Butterfly Kingdom, where butterflies from South and Central America fly freely around visitors. It opened in 2005 and has become one of the most visited spots in the park.
