Surb Nshan Church, Gyumri, Armenian Apostolic church in Kumayri district, Gyumri, Armenia
Surb Nshan Church is an Armenian Apostolic church in Gyumri's Kumayri district featuring a central dome and bell tower built in traditional stone masonry. The structure displays the hallmarks of Armenian architectural design with its carefully proportioned stonework and geometric forms.
The church was built between 1859 and 1864 and later underwent multiple transformations, including serving as a theater during the Soviet era. The 1988 earthquake inflicted severe damage on the structure.
The church received its official name Surb Nshan in 1870, marked by inscriptions above the northern and southern entrances. This naming reflected the community's commitment to preserving its Armenian Apostolic identity during a period of cultural change.
The church is located on Abovyan Street in Gyumri and features ramps and step-free entrances for visitor access. Its central position makes it easy to reach and navigate within the surrounding area.
Lightning struck the building when authorities attempted to transform it into an observatory during the Soviet period, destroying all astronomical equipment inside. This unexpected event put an abrupt end to the ambitious conversion project.
