Tallurutiup Imanga National Marine Conservation Area, Marine conservation area in Qikiqtani Region, Nunavut, Canada.
Tallurutiup Imanga is a marine conservation area protecting Arctic waters that stretch between Baffin Bay and Somerset Island. It covers Lancaster Sound and adjacent waterways, forming one of Canada's largest marine protected zones.
The conservation area was established in 2017 through a partnership between Canada, Nunavut, and the Qikiqtani Inuit Association. This collaboration created one of Canada's most significant marine protection initiatives in the Arctic.
The name comes from Inuktitut and combines Tallurut, referring to Devon Island, with Imanga, meaning surrounding water. These terms show how local communities describe and connect with this part of the Arctic.
The area can be accessed through five nearby communities: Arctic Bay, Clyde River, Grise Fiord, Pond Inlet, and Resolute Bay. Access depends heavily on weather conditions and the season, so planning ahead is important.
The area contains polynyas, open water areas that function as winter refuges for Arctic marine life. These natural features have long supported the hunting practices of Inuit communities.
