Tourbière du Lac à la Tortue, Natural bog in Les Chenaux Regional County Municipality, Canada
Tourbière du Lac à la Tortue is a peatland bog in the Saint Lawrence Lowlands, southwest of Shawinigan, in the Les Chenaux area. The ground is made up of accumulated peat fed almost entirely by rainfall, which creates very acidic and nutrient-poor conditions.
The bog began forming around 10,000 years ago as water collected in shallow depressions left after the last glaciers retreated. Over time, dead plants built up because the wet conditions slowed their decay, gradually creating the thick peat layers present today.
The bog is one of the few accessible peatland areas in the Mauricie region, where visitors can observe sphagnum mosses up close. The ground cover of mosses, sundews, and cottongrass feels like a different world compared to the surrounding forest.
The best access point is at Parc Coeur nature in Saint-Narcisse, where marked trails lead through the area. The ground stays wet and soft year-round, so waterproof footwear is strongly recommended.
Some of the carnivorous plants growing here, like sundews, trap insects to get nutrients because the peat soil contains almost none. These plants are visible right along the trails and easy to spot.
