Katepwa, Resort village on Katepwa Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada
Katepwa is a resort village along Katepwa Lake in Saskatchewan, extending across three sections: Sandy Beach, Katepwa, and South Katepwa. The area includes multiple rural municipalities and provides access to golf courses, trails, beaches, and a provincial park.
Katepwa Beach was established as a resort village in 1957 and grew over decades. In 2004, three communities merged to form the District of Katepwa.
The name Katepwa comes from the Cree word Kahtapwao, meaning 'What is calling', reflecting voices First Nations people heard echoing across the lake shores. This origin story shapes how visitors understand the place's deeper connection to the land.
The village sits about 95 kilometers northeast of Regina and is easily accessible by car. The provincial park has no entry fee, and most trails, beaches, and golf courses are freely available to explore.
The Qu'Appelle Valley, where Katepwa sits, was carved about 14000 years ago when retreating glaciers and meltwater shaped the Saskatchewan landscape. You can still see this geological history reflected in the lake's shoreline and surrounding valley formation.
