Burg Lichtenstein, Rock castle near Chur, Switzerland
The stone ruins of Lichtenstein Castle stand on a narrow hilltop at 770 meters elevation, featuring thick defensive walls and a simple courtyard layout.
The castle dates back to the early 12th century, with first written records of the Lichtenstein family appearing in documents from June 26, 1180.
The local population named the structure Katzenburg due to its physical resemblance to a reclining cat when viewed from specific angles.
While the ruins cannot be entered for safety reasons, visitors can reach the site via a path from Haldenstein village to observe the exterior structures.
The castle's remains show no signs of forceful destruction, suggesting a gradual abandonment that occurred during the 15th century.
