Neuburg Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Untervaz, Switzerland.

Neuburg Castle is a medieval fortress ruin in Untervaz in the canton of Grisons. The main tower has a rectangular shape and dominates the site, while wall fragments around it show the former extent of the fortification.

The castle was built in the late 1200s by the Tumb family of Neuburg and first appeared in written records in 1345. It emerged from the need to defend and control territory in this Alpine valley.

The ruins represent how noble families in this region built fortified homes to display their power and control the valleys below. Visitors can see the solid construction methods that were typical for medieval defenses in the Grisons area.

The ruins sit on elevated ground, so expect uneven terrain and steep slopes during your visit. Sturdy footwear and time for careful exploration are recommended, especially in wet weather conditions.

The main tower is among the largest in the entire Raetian region and features a three-part interior layout with an entrance set well above ground level. This arrangement was unusual and shows how carefully the defenders planned the structure.
