Burg Falkenstein

Burg Falkenstein is a castle ruin in Grisons that stands on a rocky outcrop with several stone structures spread across the site. The remains include residential towers and defensive walls built over different periods, showing how the fortress evolved over time.

The fortress was first mentioned in writing in 1338 under the name Valkenstein. It served as an important stronghold in the region through the centuries before eventually being abandoned.

The castle structure demonstrates multiple construction phases through its architectural elements, including a rectangular palas ranging from 12 to 13.5 meters.

The ruin sits on a ridge and is reached by walking uphill from the base. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for uneven ground and sections that may be partially collapsed.

The north wall contains a narrow notched opening with an arched alcove holding a stone bench and a carved spout for pouring water. This feature reveals details about daily life within the fortress centuries ago.
