Alt Aspermont Castle, castle ruins in Switzerland
Alt Aspermont Castle is a castle ruin located on a rocky ridge above Jenins in Grisons. The remains show a tall square tower with seven levels, multiple walls, and foundations that reveal former living spaces, a courtyard, and defensive structures.
The castle was founded by the Aspermont family in the 1200s and grew into a seat of local power during the Middle Ages. Wars in the late medieval period damaged it, and when the Three Leagues took control in the 1500s, they used it as a residence but never restored its strength. It was eventually abandoned and left to decay.
The name Alt Aspermont comes from the medieval lords who ruled this land long ago. Walking through the ruins, you can see how residents mixed defense and daily living, with rooms and structures built to maintain control over the valley below.
The site is easily reached by a short walking trail that passes near the ruins and crosses uneven ground. Visit during daylight hours to enjoy the views safely and navigate the rocky terrain without difficulty.
The inner walls still show traces of old painted decorations from multiple centuries, left by craftsmen across different periods. These subtle details reveal that residents created more than just fortifications but also brought beauty and comfort into the stone.
