Thur waterfalls, Natural cascade system in Unterwasser, Switzerland.
The Thur waterfalls are a series of cascades in Unterwasser in canton St. Gallen, where water flows down steep rock faces and drops about 23 meters. The system spans multiple stages with water churning powerfully over the rocks as it descends.
The falls remained largely untouched by human structures until 1927, when observation platforms were built to give visitors better access to the cascades. This early infrastructure set the foundation for the visitor paths and viewpoints that exist today.
The falls have long drawn locals who come to experience the power of the rushing water and spend time in nature. The site serves as a natural gathering spot where people from the region connect with their surrounding landscape.
A path of about 750 meters from Unterwasser leads to the falls and is easy to walk. Free parking is available near the local Coop supermarket at the entrance to town.
An elevated walkway is built directly into the cliff face, allowing visitors to walk above the river and reach multiple viewpoints through a tunnel system. This unusual construction offers views of the falls that would otherwise be impossible to access.
