Belp Castle

Belp Castle is a stone fortification on the outskirts of Belp municipality featuring traditional Swiss architectural elements and defensive structures from past centuries. The building stands on elevated ground and displays characteristic features of castle construction with walls and towers that reflect its defensive past.

The von Luternau family built the castle between 1550 and 1554, replacing an earlier wooden fortress that stood in the village from 1327. This shift from timber to stone construction reflected the family's growing power and need for stronger defenses.

The castle transformed from a noble residence into the administrative hub for the Seftigen district and continues to serve local governance today. This shift shows how historic buildings adapt to support the needs of the communities that surround them.

The location sits near Bern Airport and is easily reached by car or public transport. Visitors should expect that parts of the building may not be open to the public since it serves as an administrative center.
