Burgistein Castle, Medieval castle in Burgistein, Switzerland
Burgistein Castle is a stone castle in the Burgistein municipality of canton Bern, sitting on elevated ground above the Gürbetal valley. The structure features multiple towers and defensive walls that command views over the surrounding farming landscape.
The castle was founded in 1260 by Jordan I of Thun and destroyed in 1340 after the Battle of Laupen, but later rebuilt. The property then passed through several noble families who shaped its history over the following centuries.
The castle received designation as a Class A Swiss cultural property of national significance, representing medieval architectural heritage in the Bernese region.
Visitors can explore the grounds through hiking trails that wind through the agricultural landscape of the Thun region. These paths connect several historical sites and allow walkers to discover the natural surroundings alongside cultural attractions.
The Wattenwyls, a local noble family, held the property for over two centuries and left deep marks on its development. After this long period, the Graffenried family took ownership, marking a significant shift in how the place was managed.
