Rümligen Castle

Rümligen Castle is a medieval fortification that rises on a high stone terrace above Thurnen village, composed of interconnected stone buildings. A tall rectangular tower dominates the complex, extending seven stories high and integrated with residential structures that form the main body of the castle.

Construction of the castle began in 1076 as a residence for the Barons of Rümligen, who governed territories between the Gürbe and Sense rivers. Its early foundation marks an important point in the medieval power structures that shaped the region.

The castle holds class A status as a national heritage property in Switzerland, reflecting its role in preserving medieval building traditions. Walking around the structure, you can observe how different architectural styles from various periods have been layered into its walls.

The castle sits on elevated terrain in Rümligen and is reachable by walking paths that connect to the surrounding village. Visitors should prepare for a walk from nearby parking areas, as the elevated platform adds some distance to the approach.

The northern tower contains stones and structural elements from the Early Middle Ages, with some walls possibly originating from Roman times. This layering in the foundations reveals that the site held strategic value long before the castle's formal construction began.
