Hünegg Castle

Hünegg Castle is a stone structure built on elevated ground overlooking Lake Thun, featuring symmetrical wings and ornamental detailing throughout. The building blends Renaissance style with 19th-century elements and now functions as a museum with a café for visitors.

A Prussian baron commissioned this residence between 1861 and 1863 above Lake Thun as a private home. The construction reflects the architectural tastes and building methods of the mid-to-late 1800s.

The rooms display how wealthy families lived around 1900, with furnishings and decoration from that era preserved in their original arrangement. Walking through them gives you a sense of the aesthetic values and daily habits of the late 1800s.

The castle is open to visitors from May through October, with the warmer months offering the best experience. Plan to spend several hours exploring the rooms and enjoying the views across the lake.

The castle cellar hosts an antiques market where collectors can purchase vintage items in a 19th-century setting. This unexpected use of the historic space shows how the building remains part of local community life.
